Home

Is this an official government site?

No. It is an independent guide in English. It links to the Lai Chau provincial tourism portal and other official sources so you can check each fact yourself.

Is Lai Chau the same as Lai Chau city?

No. Lai Chau is the province. Its former capital, Lai Chau city, became the two wards of Tan Phong and Doan Ket on 1 July 2025, and most buses still show the destination as Lai Chau.

Can I visit Lai Chau as a day trip from Sa Pa?

You can cross O Quy Ho pass and come back in a day; the summit is about 15 km from Sa Pa. Villages, the plateau and the peaks need at least one night in the province.

Can you book a trek or a homestay for me?

No. The guide does not sell anything, take bookings or name businesses.

Destinations

Which area should I choose for a short trip?

With two days from Sa Pa, the pass plus one village such as Sin Suoi Ho. With four days, add either Sin Ho or the Tan Uyen and Than Uyen valleys, not both.

Where should I stay as a base?

The provincial centre, the former Lai Chau city, has the widest choice and the bus station. Villages offer homestays if you want to stay closer to a trail or a field.

Are the destinations in Lai Chau busy?

The pass and the glass bridge can be busy at weekends and holidays. Villages and the plateau are quieter, and trails see groups mainly in the rhododendron season.

O Quy Ho pass

How long does it take to cross O Quy Ho pass?

About two to two and a half hours from Sa Pa to the provincial centre by car, more with stops. The summit is about 15 km from Sa Pa and about 54 km from the provincial centre.

Is the O Quy Ho pass dangerous?

It is a steep working road with heavy vehicles and sharp bends, and it is exposed to fog and landslides in the rainy season. In dry daylight with a careful driver it is a normal mountain road.

How much is the Rong May glass bridge?

Reports give VND 400,000 for an adult in 2019 and VND 500,000 in 2025, with the elevator included. Confirm the current price at the gate.

Can I see the view in winter?

Sometimes. Winter mornings can be clear above the cloud, but the Sa Pa side is often foggy and cold. Leave a spare morning if the view matters.

Sin Ho and Phong Tho

Is Sin Ho worth the detour from the main road?

If you have at least two nights and want quiet highland villages, yes. If you have one day, the four-hour round trip leaves little time on the plateau.

When is the Sin Ho market?

The official description says highland markets are held at weekends. Confirm the day locally, because village markets can rotate.

How far is Sin Suoi Ho from the provincial centre?

About 30 km, according to the national ethnic-tourism portal.

Can I visit Sin Suoi Ho without staying overnight?

Yes, it is close enough for a half-day visit, but evenings and mornings are when village life is most visible.

Pu Ta Leng

How many days does Pu Ta Leng take?

Usually three days and two nights; very fit walkers do it in two days with one night on the mountain.

When do the rhododendrons flower on Pu Ta Leng?

From February to April. Any given slope is at its peak for about two to three weeks.

Do I need a permit to climb Pu Ta Leng?

We found no formal permit requirement on the Lai Chau side, but your host must declare your stay, and in 2026 a neighbouring national park asked that climbers be declared to forest rangers. Check locally before you go.

Can I climb Pu Ta Leng without a guide?

It is not sensible. The trails are steep, unmarked in places and often in cloud, and official advice recommends a reputable local guide in mountain areas.

Pu Ta Leng, because it is close to the provincial centre and done in two or three days. It is still a hard, steep walk.

It is possible but not advisable. From May to September trails are wet, streams rise and views are rare. Most climbs run from October to April.

Do I need a permit for Pu Si Lung?

A 2015 report described a Border Guard permit collected in the provincial centre and presented at the Pa Ve Su border post. Check the current procedure with the border guard.

Permits and registration

Do I need a permit to visit Lai Chau?

No permit is needed for the province in general. Some border areas and border-zone treks require permission, and your host must declare your stay.

Why does the homestay want my passport?

Because the host must declare a foreign guest's stay to the police, within 24 hours in mountain areas.

What happens if I climb without registering?

You risk being turned back, and a 2026 report cited fines of several million dong for entering protected forest without permission.

Homestays

Are homestays in Lai Chau safe?

Community-tourism villages host visitors regularly. Keep valuables with you, agree prices in advance and tell someone where you are staying.

Do homestays have hot water?

Many now do, through gas or solar heaters, but supply can be limited. Older houses may not.

Can I just turn up without booking?

In community-tourism villages you often can outside weekends and holidays, but arriving after dark is unwise. Booking a day ahead is safer at harvest and in the rhododendron season.
